HEIDI CANTON:

Head Coach - Apex Volleyball Academy  U-14 SynergyTeam
Email:  heidic@apexva.org

Why do I coach?    My favorite place to coach is the U14’s.  Preparing athletes for high school while their bodies & minds are fighting one another is what I look forward to every season.  I love watching players go from just playing volleyball to expanding outside their comfort zone beyond anything they could have imagined.  I call it “the light bulb effect”. It's when that imaginary light bulb appears above their head and the next level of volleyball begins.  It's truly the proudest moment for a coach.

Coaching Philosophy I believe that sports can have long term effects on the outcome of a young person's life.  While a player is learning how to hit line, angle, pass, and set or dump the ball they are also learning to make a split decision that can change to outcome of the game.  Similar pressures occur in high school as well throughout life. It’s the decisions you make that can positively change the outcome of your life and others.  Learning how to evaluate a "moment in time" and make a good decision is critical in all areas of life. Sports assist in teaching a person both physical skills and help to mold you as an individual.

Volleyball Coaching Experience: Heidi has been Coaching Volleyball for the past 18 years. She started volunteering at the YMCA. She later moved to coaching club volleyball. Heidi has been the head coached for many age groups including: U12, 14, 16 & 18’s. The last couple of years she has traveled to Europe to coach with People to People Sport Ambassador programs at the World Sport Festival. She has worked with some of the greatest volleyball coaches in the nation. (John Dunning - Stanford University & Russ Rose - Penn State University). Heidi has developed camps, league & tournament to get the athlete ready for the next season or event. Working from pre-school, to college level she brings experience is all directions.

RICK WRIGHT:

Assistant Coach - Apex Volleyball Academy  U-14  Synergy Team

I have played the sport of volleyball competitively for more than 20 years. During that time I developed many great friendships with other players.  Because of this, my life has been greatly enhanced.  Volleyball is truly a great sport.

In addition to playing, I was an assistant coach for the freshman team at Lewis and Clark High School.  I really enjoyed watching the athletes grow to their potential  and become better athletes.  This is what makes coaching worthwhile.  I am looking forward to the upcoming season with APEX Volleyball Academy.  I know that our 14's team is going to learn and grow in so many ways and I can't wait to be a part of that.

About Me:

I attended the University of Washington and Eastern Washington University
I currently work for a construction company in Spokane.
Love the sport and looking forward to working with everyone this season.
